DNA for lawyers is the brain child of Greg Hampikian, PhD; Justin J. McShane, JD, F-AIC; and Josh D. Lee, JD. After Attorneys McShane and Lee hosted and sponsored the Innocence! Forensic Science, Chemistry and the Law features the Innocence Project and Wrongful Convictions at the 244th ACS National Meeting on August 20, 2012 in Philadelphia, PA. They sat down with one of the exonerees, Steven Barnes and Dr. Hampikian over dinner. We all discussed the total lack of structured and practical training for the defense bar in DNA. Attorneys Lee and McShane knew from their success ACS Forensic Lawyer Scientist course that there was a need and a market for teaching lawyers technical scientific matters via hands-on training in a laboratory. So, together, Greg Hampikian, PhD; Justin J. McShane, JD, F-AIC; and Josh D. Lee, JD developed the first course. It was a full course with a long waiting list. Now, the legacy of their efforts provide for unmatched hands-on training for lawyers in DNA.
