Course Overview

The students learn by participating in lectures and laboratory sessions. The laboratory topics include:

  • An Introduction to Forensic DNA Analysis
  • DNA Extraction from Swabs
  • Real-Time PCR Data Analysis
  • Quantitation Using Realtime PCR and Quantifiler® Duo from Applied Biosystems
  • Setting up PCR reactions for STR analysis using Applied Biosystems kits
  • Capillary Electrophoresis using Applied Biosystems 3130
  • 3130 Data Collection
  • GeneMapper® ID Software Introduction to Analysis
  • Qiagen BioRobot EZ1 Demonstration
  • Allele Designation and Artifact Identification
  • Interpretation of DNA mixture data
  • Interpretation of Y-STR data
  • Calculation of Random Match Probability and Combined Probability of Inclusion
  • Mixture interpretation data

 

The students go also over data from important DNA cases such as:

  • OJ Simpson and
  • Amanda Knox

We will also hear from Charles Fain who spent 17.5 years on death row before his DNA exoneration.

Students will be instructed on building easy to communicate and actionable themes of the case, as well as how to communicate with juries, and how to cross-examine a technical DNA expert.
